Here is a harsh assessment by JH Kunstler of the US's current economic and political juncture. But beyond the cynicism he offers some hopeful guidelines for a future economy: revitalized agriculture and small local industry. He rightly asserts that the future economy cannot be based on marketing, video games, outsourcing, golf courses, or any of the things that have defined our pseudo-economy for some years now.
