A book on anarchist tribal peoples
This is a review of a very interesting-sounding book, Jim Scott's The Art of not being Governed. Basically the book contends that the hill tribes in northern Southeast Asia are not primitive, pre-State peoples, but rather that their way of life is an explicit avoidance of the problems that come with incorporation into a centralized State. I look forward to reading this book someday, especially since my wife worked with just such tribes in Laos in her thesis on illicit crop erradication.
