Yesterday the government of Colombia signed a ceasefire with the FARC. This is huge news--it essentially ends the declared war that's been going on for the past 50 (or 60 plus, depending on how you count it) years. This article does a decent job of explaining why this matters, what challenges still remain, and what roadblocks there are between this and a definitive peace accord (namely, the fanatical opposition of Colombian society's more fascist elements to a negotiated peace).
My family has been celebrating for a few days now. This is a big deal.
