This is a very long-form article from the Atlantic that explores in greater detail, with greater nuance, a broader historical and academic reach, and with more concrete recommendations for a way forward, the issue of the new pseudo-meritocratic elite that has cornered wealth and power in the US.
A lot of other publications have been addressing this issue in the past few years, but this one really finishes the job. It talks about how dangerous it is for so many of us in the US to invest in giving our own kids a leg up (piano lessons, SAT coaching, moving to exclusive suburbs with "good" schools) at the expense of everyone else's kids. I know it's long, but if my readers are going to read anything in the next month, I'd strongly recommend this Atlantic article over anything else.
