News from Haiti
In my World Policy Institute blog yesterday, I lamented the recent lack of news coverage of Haiti. Well today the coverage is back with a vengeance, as protesters in the streets of Port-au-Prince call for the president to step down (his term will end next February, and in the event of an absence of elections he has decided to stay on as president for another 3 months). Here's a post from the Haiti Relief and Reconstruction blog that summarizes the news coverage of this event. It seems that another bone of discontent for the protesters is that Aristide, the twice-elected, twice-coup d'etated ex-president of Haiti, has still not been allowed to return to Haiti in the 6 years since his last ouster, and his extremely popular party, Fanmi Lavalas, has been barred from elections in Haiti.
