More on Wisconsin and unions
Here is an article from the New Yorker on the importance of unions for the US. Among other things, the article helped me come to terms with my discomfort with the Wisconsin Democratic Senators' fleeing the state. The author draws a line between recent Republican filibusters (and the threat thereof) in the US Senate, which are designed to prevent any legislation from being passed on a given issue, and the Wisconsin Senators' actions, which are meant to stall legislation so as to draw attention to the governor's attempted union-busting, and thus gain support to change the terms of the law. Apparently it's worked--Wisconsin is now a nationwide fight. I'm curious to see what happens next.
