The value of Wall Street
This is a New Yorker article about the social value of banking, trading, and other Wall Street activities. I think it does a good job both of explaining the importance and real value created by normal banking, as well as the zero-sum, rent-seeking, non-value-creating nature of most Wall Street speculation and "financial innovation".
