Responsible gold

Here is an article from the Independent about sustainably mined gold. I like the idea of favoring small-scale mining practices as opposed to the destructive, murderous standard here in Colombia. The question is how to replace the large mining projects here with smaller, more responsible alternatives. Also, the monthly income the article cites for miners is only 250000 pesos, less than half the minimum wage. I know cost of living is low in the Choco region, but I hope this isn't the entirety of sustainable gold miners' income.
